17 foreign doctors arrested for practicing without permission

KATHMANDU: Some 17 foreign doctors – mostly from China – were arrested on Monday from various hospitals in Nepal for allegedly praticising without Nepal Medical Council’s (NMC) permission.
Acting on a tip-off of the NMC, they were taken under custody by the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB), according to its DIG Pushkar Karki.
“Most of them were Chinese nationals and one of them was also from Austria,” he said, adding that the number could rise as the investigation is underway. ” The raids were carried out at five hospitals in coordination with the NMC and the Forum for Protection of Consumer Rights this afternoon.”
According to the existing rules and regulations, the doctors – foreign or local – have to mandatorily take permission from the NMC before joining their work.
The doctors were arrested from 4-5 hospitals in the national capital. The respective hospital authorities were also taken in control for further investigation, he added.
